Mr. Darby and his colleagues developed a way to produce these pots on a more industrialized scale. He had a patented a technique for casting iron. To make a long story short, he used cast iron instead of brass, which was cheaper and faster than using brass.

It's said Mr. Darby named it "Dutch oven". However, given the fact that in his time, The Netherlands and Great Britain often found themselves at war, resulting in the English using "Dutch" to refer to something bad. 

So I have my doubts about Mr. Darby - an entrepreneur - giving his pan a "bad" name. Back in those days, I don't think the British were keen on buying "Dutch".
